Botox® Cosmetic

If you feel that your frown lines make you look tired and unapproachable or that your crow’s feet are starting to show your age, than a BOTOX® Cosmetic injection is just what the doctor ordered! BOTOX® is a simple, nonsurgical treatment that is injected directly into your facial muscles. It works by reducing the muscle activity that causes severe lines to form on your brow and around your eyes. With real, noticeable results, no surgery and no downtime, it’s no wonder millions of people choose BOTOX® treatments to keep them looking young and wrinkle free!

What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® is one of the best known and popular non-surgical treatments that smooths the deep, persistent lines on your forehead and around your eyes. One treatment of only a few tiny injections relaxes the muscles that cause those lines to form and keeps them relaxed up to four months.

How does BOTOX® Cosmetic work?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is produced from Clostridium botulinum bacterium, which is a natural, purified protein that attaches to nerve endings and blocks the neurotransmitter signals that trigger muscle contractions. Pioneered by an ophthalmologist in 1987 to treat muscle disorders, BOTOX® (botulinum toxin type A) was quickly adopted by cosmetic surgeons as a valuable aid to temporarily eliminate wrinkles.

Most frown lines are formed by excessive contraction of muscles in the forehead, a BOTOX® injection will place these overactive muscles into hibernation. Tiny amounts are injected into specific facial muscles so only the targeted area will be blocked. Since the offending muscle can no longer be so active the treatment will prevent further damage and more wrinkles, giving a more relaxed and youthful appearance.

Is it safe?

BOTOX® is recognized as one of the safest cosmetic treatments. Side effects are rarely serious and always temporary, which is why BOTOX® Cosmetic is now the most popular cosmetic treatment in the world.

While most people will experience no side effects from a BOTOX® injection, some possible side effects may include bruising, swelling, nausea, headaches and muscle weakness. For a complete list of potential side effects, please visit the BOTOX® Cosmetic website.

Who can get BOTOX® Cosmetic?

Any woman or man who is concerned about the appearance of their frown lines can consider BOTOX® Cosmetic. Treatment can be used by people from ages 18 to 65.

What areas can be treated?

Cosmetically, BOTOX® is most commonly used for the following areas:
·    Vertical lines between the brows (frown lines)
·    Crow’s feet
·    Squint lines
·    Horizontal forehead lines
·    Lines on the bridge of the nose
·    Downturned corners of the mouth
·    Chin puckering

Will my facial expressions continue to look natural?

Although the results are visible, a treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic will not radically change your facial appearance or make you look as if you “had work done.” The muscle activity that causes frown lines between the brows is simply reduced, so you can still frown or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases between your brows.

Can BOTOX® Cosmetic be used to treat excessive sweating?

Hyperhidrosis, also known as excessive sweating of the underarms or palms of hands and feet, can be successfully treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic. Relief from hyperhidrosis can last for around 6-12 months. Prior to treatment, the causes of secondary hyperhidrosis (e.g. hyperthyroidism, pheochromocytoma) should be considered to avoid symptomatic treatment of hyperhidrosis without the diagnosis and/or treatment of underlying disease.

When should I start using BOTOX® Cosmetic?

Traditionally, BOTOX® is well-known for removing or reducing wrinkles, but it is excellent for the prevention of lines appearing. As one gets older the loss of elasticity results with lines appearing when muscles move such as frowning. If BOTOX® is used to prevent excessive frowning then the lines will not appear in the first place.

How long do the results last?

BOTOX® lasts up to 3-4 months initially but each case is different. A two week reassessment is always recommended to assess the effect and consider a top up if necessary in certain areas. The effects of BOTOX® can last around 6 months or longer if used long term.

What should I expect during my complimentary consultation?

Prior to any BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment, you will receive a complimentary consultation to assess your treatment goals, answer all of your questions and determine if you can successfully be treated with BOTOX®. After examining your skin, your medical practitioner will assess your muscle movement by asking you to frown or smile. Based on your muscle movement, your medical pratitioner will advise you on approximately how many units of BOTOX® will be needed to achieve your desired goal. For your convenience, we can perform your complimentary consultation and BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment during the same appointment.

What should I expect during my BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment?

Just before your treatment, your medical practitioner will clean your skin and determine exactly where to administer the injections to achieve the best results. No anesthesia is required, although you may choose to numb the area with a cold pack prior to injecting. The entire treatment consists of several small injections and takes approximately 10-20 minutes. Discomfort is minimal and brief. Most patients compare the sensation to a bug bite.

What should I expect after a BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment?

Immediately after your injection, you may experience stinging at the injection site for 10-15 minutes. Some small red dots may be visible on the skin after treatment, as well as some minor bruising. Both the red dots and bruising from the BOTOX® treatment will fade after a few hours, however, for some, the bruising may last for 7-10 days. After the injection, you may immediately apply makeup and resume normal activities.

After BOTOX® is placed in the target muscles, the weakening effect gradually begins anywhere from 24 hours to 3-5 days and is not complete for 2 weeks. Therefore, optimal results are not seen as far as 2 weeks.

In some cases, deeper lines and lines which have been present for many years may not be completely removed. Such lines will require the use of dermal fillers, such as JUVEDERM® XC.
