What is micro-needling and how does the Dermapen™ work?
Collagen is the key structural support of your skin. As you age, your body breaks down collagen, leaving you with scars, wrinkles, and sagging skin. The only way to stop this process and reverse these signs of aging is to slow the breakdown process by stimulating your body to rebuild the lost collagen.
The concept of micro-needling is based on your skin’s ability to repair itself whenever it encounters physical damage, such as cuts, burns, and other abrasions. Immediately after the injury occurs, your skin goes to work dissolving the old damaged tissue and replaces it with new. With the Dermapen™, we trigger your skin to rapidly build collagen by creating micro-point punctures to skin, thus sending a message to your body for the immediate release of growth factors and the production of collagen. The concept of skin remodeling can go on for months after your treatment, but results can start to be seen as early as a 3 weeks.
Will the micro-needles leave marks or damage my skin?
As the Dermapen™ glides over your skin, it gently inserts the needles to create microscopic punctures to the skin which will temporarily push open your pores. This is received by your skin as “damage” which initiates the healing process. The needles are so small that you will not see any marks nor experience any permanent scarring.
How is the treatment administered?
The micro-needling treatment is performed in a safe and precise manner with the use of a brand new, sterile Dermapen™ needle head. The treatment is normally completed within 30-60 minutes depending on the required treatment and anatomical site.
Before we start the treatment, a topical anesthetic will be applied to your skin to ensure your comfort and a painless experience. After the skin is numbed, our medical esthetician gently moves the Dermapen™ over the treatment area. To enhance your results, during the treatment we use a special combination of hyaluronic acid and kojik acid to help lighten and plump your skin. After the treatment is complete, we finish with a cooling peptide mask to sooth, hydrate and heal your skin.
What will I look like after the treatment?
After the treatment, your skin will be slightly red and flushed in appearance, similar to the look of a moderate sunburn. You may also experience skin tightness and mild sensitivity to touch. This will diminish greatly within the next two hours following your treatment and within the next 24 hours your skin will be completely healed.
How soon will I see results?
Visible results of your skin rejuvenation are generally seen after just 6-8 weeks following procedure and improve further over time. A course of Dermapen™ sessions is usually recommended to achieve optimum results; however skin improvement is noticeable after just one treatment. We encourage you to closely follow the pre and post treatment instructions. This will allow for better results and faster healing.
How many treatments will I need?
Each patient’s skin conditions are different and require different levels of treatment. Those with mild wrinkles and fine lines may see improvement after just one treatment while more advanced skin conditions like acne scarring may need more than one session. The number of treatment sessions required will be determined during your consultation.
Is the Dermapen™ treatment safe?
Micro-needling does not involve injections and therefore allergic reactions and side-effects are unlikely to occur. It is minimally invasive, involves minimal downtime (less than 24hrs), rapid healing and requires simple after-care.
Are there any side effects or risks associated with micro-needling?
If side effects occur, they will usually subside within 24-48 hours. Possible Dermapen™ side effects include erythema, stinging, itching, tightness of the skin. To help with this, we recommend applying Recovery Complex by Eminence or SkinMedica’s TNS Ceramide Treatment Cream.
Can the Dermapen™ be administered on Asian or African American skin?
Micro-needling can be safely performed on all skin colors and types. There is no risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation as the melanocytes remain intact, like the epidermis, during micro-needling.
Other invasive procedures such as laser resurfacing are not recommended for Asian and African American skin due to the potential risks of delayed wound healing, pigmentary changes and scarring.
What are the contraindications of micro-needling treatments?
Contraindications and precautions include; keloid or raised scarring; history of eczema, psoriasis and other chronic conditions; history of actinic (solar) keratosis; history of Herpes Simplex infections; history of diabetes; presence of raised moles, warts or any raised lesions on targeted area. Absolute contraindications include; scleroderma, collagen vascular diseases or cardiac abnormalities; Rosacea and blood clotting problems; active bacterial or fungal infection; immuno-suppression; scars less than 6 months old; and facial fillers in the past 1 month.
